How to buy a domain for your business
Your domain is your business address online. Here is what you need to know to find, buy and point a domain in the right direction.
What is a domain, really?
What people usually mean by "domain" (or domain name) is a web address, but really the domain is a form of identity/address online, also used for email addresses. quickbutik.com is a domain name.
The last part of a domain name is called the top-level domain (TLD) and comes in two types:
- Country code (ccTLDs), .se, .dk, .co.uk, .de, tied to specific countries.
- Generic (gTLDs), .com, .org, .net, .shop, .store, .app, .io, global and based on the type of business.
Find available domains and see who owns one
When picking between different business names it is smart to check domain availability at the same time, ideally you want the same name everywhere.
Where you search depends on the TLD:
- National registries (like IIS for .se in Sweden, Nominet for .uk) have official search tools.
- Most domain registrars (Loopia, One.com, GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare Registrar) have search tools for both country-code and generic TLDs.
- IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) coordinates globally and maintains a complete list of TLDs.
If a domain is taken you can use WHOIS services to see who owns it and contact them to potentially buy the name.
Does it matter whether you have .com, .se, .shop, or something else?
For local e-commerce, your country code TLD (.se, .dk, .de, .co.uk) is usually the strongest, recognizable, trust-building, and helpful for local SEO. .com is second best and works well if you plan international expansion.
Since 2014 many new generic TLDs (.shop, .store, .app, .io, .design and more) have become available. In 2026 .shop and .store are established and work excellently for e-commerce stores, especially if your first-choice .com is taken.
Avoid .org, .info and .net if you are a commercial business, they signal non-profit, information site, or network.
Tip: For SEO, a country-code TLD is usually the best option if you are primarily targeting a single national market.
Register and buy a domain in two steps
1. Compare domain providers. There are many companies selling domains, and some shady actors. Reputable players: Loopia, One.com, Binero, Glesys (Sweden), Namecheap, Cloudflare Registrar (often cheapest for .com), GoDaddy (international). Compare annual fees, renewal prices and support.
2. Order your domain. Once you have chosen a provider, just register the name on their website. Pay the annual fee, done.
Point your domain to the right place
After purchase you need to connect the domain to your website or store. This is done via DNS settings at your domain provider, you change the A record or CNAME to point at your store's server.
